Profile

Mr Callan Duck
Senior Research Scientist
My main function at SMRU is to monitor the size and status of the UK seal populations. Almost all of the surveying I undertake is in Scotland, with Chris Morris. Dave Thompson usually looks after harbour seals in east England. We survey harbour seals during their June and July breeding season in limited local areas. Our main surveys are during their annual moult, in August, when we obtain an index of the size of populations in different parts of Scotland. We survey grey seals during their breeding season, between mid September and the end of November/early December. We use light aircraft and small helicopters for our aerial surveys.
