Profile

Mr Rick Camp
Postgraduate student
His research topic focuses on spatio-temporal models for improved inference in point transect models of wildlife population density with an application to Hawaiian forest birds. Supervised by Prof. Len Thomas and Prof. Steve Buckland. Funding provided through a CREEM studentship with additional support from USGS-PIERC.
Research Overview:
Richard 'Rick' Camp is a PGR in Statistics at the University of St Andrews and a Statistician at the U.S. Geological Ssurvey - Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center, Hawaii. He received his B.S. in Wildlife Management from the University of Minnesota in 1991 and his M.S. in Wildlife Biology from Colorado State University in 1995. He currently is a PhD student at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, in the School of Mathematics and Statistics. He has published more than 40 journal articles, more than 30 technical reports, two book chapters, and contributed to six recovery plans. He has conducted field research on plants, birds, reptiles, mammals, and insects, as well as developed experimental and sampling design protocols, and statistical analyses. He has worked in subalpine, subarctic, desert, primary and secondary temperate and tropical forest, marine, and island ecosystems of the western hemisphere, Australia, Europe and Pacific Ocean. His research primarily focuses on abundance and distribution monitoring across multiple scales, trends in populations, Bayesian inference, hierarchical modeling, point-process modeling, and spans topics including conservation ecology, wildlife biology, landscape ecology and analytical techniques. He is the Ecology Associate Editor for Northwest Science and a member of the American Ornithologists’ Union, American Statistical Association, Ecological Society of America, Royal Statistical Society, Society for Conservation Biology, and The Wildlife Society.
